American Institute on Political and Economic Systems
7th-30th July 2000, Prague

Organizers: The Fund for American Studies, Georgetown University, Charles University

General Information: In 1993 the American Institute on Political and Economic Studies (AIPES) was launched by the Fund for American Studies to capitalize on historic opportunity created by the collapse of communism. AIPES brings emerging leaders from universities throughout Central and Eatern Europe to Prague to study important political and economic concepts. Using the Amirican experince as a starting point, the participants examine several models for organizing their economies and governing their societies and are encouraged to apply these concepts to the transitions already underway in their home countries.

100 students from 25 countries in Central and Eastern Europe participate in the event. For three weeks students will attend courses in politics and economics, participate in a parlamentary simulation, listen to lectures given by prominent speakers from the region and attend special events.

The event is annnual and takes place each July.

AIPES 2000 application dealine: March 15, 2000

Admission Policy: Approximately 100 students will be admitted to the Institute. Priority will be given to student from Central and Eastern Europe, and to Americans who have attended one of The Fund's Institutes in the US. Central and Eastern European Students must be currently enrolled in a college or university. Admission decision are based upon academic record, extracurricular achievements, leadership qualities, work experience, and English language ability.

The actual program costs are more than $2500 per student. But the students will be required to pay a minimum of $500. The amount not paid by the students is underwritten by generous scolarship supporters of The Fund for American Studies.
