The Bryce Harlow Institute on Business and Governmental
Affairs General Information: The Bryce Harlow Institute on Business and Governmental Affairs has provided hundreds of students with important lessons about the link between free enterprise and government. By meeting with government relations experts from a wide range of industries, you will learn how business represents its interests in the nation's capital. Two classes at Georgetown University, an internship at a major national corporation or trade association, and a series of dialogues with powerful Washington lobbyists provide a unique educational and pre-professional experience. Accommodation and cultural life: Georgetown University campus offers a traditional collegiate setting in one of Washington's most attractive and distinctive residential neighbourhoods. Students live in furnished 4-person apartments arranged around a grassy, tree-lined courtyard. Just four blocks from Georgetown's campus is M Street, the heart of Washington's bursting nightlife, shopping and restaurant scene. Just minutes away by bus or subway are dozens of world famous monuments, historical sites, and cultural arrtactions. Throughout the summer, The Fund for American Studies organises group social events for the students, including cookouts, museum tours, parties and a trip to nearby Baltimore for a major league baseball game. Study: the Institute's seven-week curriculum consists of two three-credit courses at Georgetown University taught by internationally renowned professors. The courses are: Business and Government Affairs and Power and Values in Organisations. Evening forums will enable you to meet top lobbyists shaping government policy today. For approximately 32 hours a week, you will intern in a lobbying office of a major national organisation or trade association. Intern responsibility vary, but often include covering congressional hearings, conducting research, coordinating events, managing databases, and writing for a newsletter or other publication. Sample list of internships: Application guidelines: The Bryce Harlow Institute enrolls approximately 40 students each summer. All students must be undergraduates who have completed at least two semesters of study at an accredited college or university by the start of the Institute. Application deadline 2000: March 15 - for Americans; February 15 - for international students living outside the US. Costs and financing: Total cost of the Program is $3,990. However, in 1999 scholarships were offered to more than 70% of students who requested financing, with an average award of $3,650. more than $65,000 in scholarships will be offered for the summer 2000 program.
