The Engalitcheff Institute on Comparative Politics and
Economic Systems
General Information: One of Washington's top academic internship programs, the Entgalitcheff Institute on Comparative Political and Economic Systems has provided undergraduates with the ultimate Washington, DC summer experience for the last thirty years. The Entgalitcheff Institute offers students the unparalleled opportunity to live, learn and intern for seven weeks in the nation's capital. Two classes of Georgetown University, along with briefings by officials at top government institutions and weekly dialogues with leaders in foreign policy provide a unique educational and pre-professional experience. While interning with organisations involved in political, economic and international affairs, students gain practical experience and interact with people who can be a significant resource for pursuing future careers. Accommodation and cultural life: Georgetown University campus offers a traditional collegiate setting in one of Washington's most attractive and distinctive residential neighbourhoods. Students live in furnished 4-person apartments arranged around a grassy, tree-lined courtyard. Just four blocks from Georgetown's campus is M Street, the heart of Washington's bursting nightlife, shopping and restaurant scene. Just minutes away by bus or subway are dozens of world famous monuments, historical sites, and cultural attractions. Throughout the summer, The Fund for American Studies organises group social events for the students, including cookouts, museum tours, parties and a trip to nearby Baltimore for a major league baseball game. Study: the Institute's seven-week curriculum consists of two
three-credit courses at Georgetown University taught by internationally
renowned professors. The courses are: Comparative Economic Systems
and The Transformation of American Politics. For approximately 30 hours a week, you will intern in a Washington public policy office, international organisations, federal agencies, etc. The internships provide students with a firsthand look at the workings of the US economy and political system. Intern responsibility vary, but often include covering congressional hearings, conducting research, coordinating events, managing databases, and writing for a newsletter or other publication. Sample list of internships Application guidelines: The Entgalitcheff Institute on Comparative Political and Economic Systems enrolls approximately 100 students each summer. All students must be undergraduates who have completed at least two semesters of study at an accredited college or university by the start of the institute. Application deadline 2000: March 15 - for Americans; January 15 - for international students living outside the US. Costs and financing: Total cost of the Program is $3990. However, in 1999 scholarships were offered to more than 70% of students who requested financing, with an average award of $2580. more than $126,000 in scholarships will be offered for the summer 2000 program.
